Murray Gell-Mann is most famous for predicting the existence of quarks.

Murray Gell-Mann named quarks after characters from James Joyce's unreadable novel Finnegan's Wake. Richard Feynman wanted to call them Partons after Dolly Parton, but his colleagues had intellectual pretensions and he lost the argument.
