No George Washington biography would be complete without relating a famous apocryphal tale. The story goes that when he was a child he chopped down his father's favourite cherry tree, just to try out a new axe. When his father asked him about it, he is supposed to have said "I cannot tell a lie. It was I who chopped down the cherry tree." But Parson Mason Weems could happily tell a lie, and had made this story up in a children's book. He is to be forgiven, because it indicated the personal integrity, sense of duty, courage, honour and far-sightedness that Washington would show as a man.
George Washington was given the name Father of His Country for his role as commander in chief of the colonial armies during the American War of Independence (1775–83) and on becoming first president of the United States (1789-97).
