ASDA Catalogue
Asda ended print catalogue production in September 2009. The Asda Direct catalogue
is now only available via the web.
The ASDA catalogue had become, in print, a 452-page behemoth with a run of more
than 3m copies twice a year from HH Print Management and Prinovis Liverpool. It
had launched in 2008, and had initially been printed by German-based printer Tiefdruck Schwann-Bagel and managed by JPS Print
Management in the UK.
ASDA say that smaller, category specific ASDA catalogues may appear in print
sometime in the future. But don't hold your breath for anything useful, the web
is now so dominant. Who reading this uses a print catalogue for more than
purposes of nostalgia? Even when I use companies like Argos, which have a
heavily promoted print catalogue, I always concentrate on the online version.
You don't have to wrestle with a massively heavy book or endlessly flip through
pages and an inadequate index to find products. Finding things using online
search is much easier. Also, the online version often offer customer comments,
latest bargains, and more options.
So well done ASDA for moving with the times! By ditching their print catalogue they will be able to reduce costs and concentrate on providing a better online service. And don't feel sorry for the printers. Asda awarded a multi-million pound contract to HH in October 2008, including all of its print work but excluding point-of-sale and labels.
