Kays Catalogue

Kays catalogue is a famous British Mail Order Catalogue, which became very popular in the 1970s and the brand name remains popular today.

Kays Catalogue - heritage

The progress of Kays catalogue began with the founding of the Kays company by W. Kilbourne Kay in Worcester in 1890. Since then Kays catalogue has been a major employer in the city. Kay & Co Ltd was based for much of the 20th century in St Oswald's, a purpose built building situated in the Tything, a historic street running north from Worcester city centre. It was designed by Simpson and Ayrton, the London based architects, who also designed Worcester Art Gallery.

Kays catalogue was so successful that Kay & Co Ltd eventually developed offices and warehouses in Worcester, Leeds, Glasgow, Newtown, Bradford, Bristol, Droitwich, Lancaster and York. 

The burgeoning success of Kays catalogue in the 1970s-80s led to the largest Kays depot opening in Leeds in 1981, but cutbacks and competition led to its closure in August 2004. On 23 February 2007 Kays original depot in Worcester closed. GUS amalgamated Kays and Littlewoods as Shop Direct, centred around Littlewoods Traditional home in Liverpool. Kays catalogue remains as as an online and offline presence.
