J Sainsbury - Sainsbury Supermarket
J Sainsbury plc is the parent company of Sainsbury Supermarket ltd, the third largest supermarket chain in the UK.
- J Sainsbury was founded by John James Sainsbury, with his wife Mary Ann, in London, England in 1869.
J Sainsbury pioneered self-service retailing in the UK, growing rapidly
in the Victorian era to become the largest grocery retailer
by 1922. Its heyday came in the 1980s, but in the 1990s J Sainbury management became complacent,
allowing Tesco to become the market leader
by 1995, and allowing ASDA to become the second-largest retailer in
2003. Sainsbury Supermarket was demoted into third place, a position it still
occupies, but still remains
one of the UK's major companies, and the major asset of J Sainsbury.
The founding Sainsbury family still retain roughly 15% of J Sainsbury plc shares. The largest family
shareholder is Lord Sainsbury of Turville.
