Inserting Google AdSense Ads

This page gives you some tips for inserting Google AdSense ads into web pages that you have already constructed.

First you need to decide if you want to maximise the money you make from inserting Google AdSense ads, or if you want to keep your content "up front".  If you want people to read your content without being distracted by advertising then you shouldn't be considering Google AdSense. But, if you are happy to lose some potential readers, then you need to decide on the balance between losing readers and making money from AdSense.

This advice is supported by other sources, including Google. If you read the Google AdSense help pages you will see the extremely useful Google AdSense hotspot diagram. My experiments for finding the hottest place to insert Google AdSense ads on my site agree with this diagram.

Now you have some idea about the best places for inserting Google AdSense ads, you should think about how you can do it without upsetting the structure of your web pages. There are certain tactics you can use to make this process less painful.

For instance, if you add a rectangle "top centre" and a skyscraper down the left margin, then this simply moves the text down and right, so you probably do not need to redesign.

Google recommends margins as hot areas for AdSense. If you have any spare space, it's well worth inserting skyscraper ads. They come in various sizes, so you should have no problems placing them. Small spaces can also be filled with adlinks. I find they fit very neatly in the top left corner beside the heading. Images draw the eye, so by having a video link below the top advert and beside the skyscraper you give your ads the best chance of being noticed.

In summary: inserting Google AdSense Ads into a web page is usually a straightforward procedure, and well worth the effort!
