Google Maps Navigation is a GPS navigation system with voice guidance and other features.
In 2009, Google Maps Navigation was released in conjunction with Google Android OS 2.0 Eclair. Google Maps Navigation features include:
- Search in plain English
- Search by voice
- Traffic view
- Search along route
- Satellite view
- Street View
- Car dock mode
Mobile devices that implement Google Maps Navigation include:
- Motorola Droid
Google Maps Navigation is free. One drawback of Google Maps Navigation,
inherited from Google Maps for Android, is that an internet connection is required to get information from Google
Maps.
Google Maps for Navigation is a major threat to Tom-Tom, Garmin and other navigation service providers. The application is only available initially to Verizon users with Android 2.0 or
higher.
