Google Search Engine Advanced
The Google search engine advanced research project came to fruition at Stanford in 1996.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin were the original developers of the Google search engine. Advanced features of today's engine were already present in their early research engine.
Larry and Sergey were unhappy that existing search engines ranked results only by how many times a search term appeared on the page. They suggested that a search engine should analyze the relationships between web pages, as well as the content of the page.
- With the Google search engine, advanced backlinks technology was introduced. Page and Brin came up with the idea that backlinks should be used to estimate a site's importance.
By 1999 Google was an established company looking for ways to make sustainable profits from its search engine. By 2000 Google introduced advertisements associated with the search keyword. Keywords were auctioned, with bidding starting at 5 cents a click. This mechanism is open to click fraud, which is the biggest problem that Google inc. faces today.
The Google PageRank mechanism was patented in 2001, and assigned to Stanford University with Lawrence Page as the inventor.
By 2006 the Google AdWords advertising programme was generating nearly all of Google's income. Google distributes the ads to other search companies, and web sites participating in the Google Adsense programme.
Google was added to the Standard & Poor 500 index in 2006.
