Metadata: Information about Information

Metadata is information about information. It is anything you know about a documents you’re searching beyond the words it contains.

The <meta> tag is used to store information (metadata) about a HTML document in the document itself.

Google maintains one key metadata field for each page it indexes: PageRank. This indicates how many pages point to it.
