Sean Phelan started Multimap in 1995, with the vision of bringing maps to mobile phones. Formerly a consultant in mobile telecoms, he was also a sailor smitten by GPS and mapping technology.

But, back then, Phelan found that web-based services were the way to go, and most of Multimaps profits were based on Web applications. Mobile phones were just not powerful enough, and the displays not big enough,  to give a good user experience back in 1995.

One of the most successful kinds of web applications that Multimap has supported are store locators. They include Waitrose, Barratt's, Volkswagen and Robert Dyas, and many other companies. Although you will most likely see the maps labelled as Bing maps, since the companies' takeover by Microsoft

Multimap has offices in London and Sydney, with more than fifty staff.
