In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon introduces Christopher, a fact-obsessed autistic youth. The title "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" would be expected for a detective novel, and that's what Mark Haddon's novel is. But, in this case, the lead character has to become a detective to work out how the ordinary world functions. This world is taken for granted by most of us, but for someone suffering from high-functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome it becomes an ongoing puzzle that needs to be solved.
Haddon describes how it feels to, for example, not know how to read people's faces, to be spooked by vivid colours and loud noise, and to hate being touched. Life is hard for Christopher in ways he doesn't fully understand and we, in turn, find him difficult to understand. This novel demands that we respect, even admire, his disability rather than pity him for it.
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon is a beautiful fictional account of an unusual, but sometimes rewarding, disability that afflicts more people (especially men) than you might think.
