'It sent my child mental. You haven't heard the last of this.' Rebecca Fellows, Richmond, Surrey

Flanimals is illustrated by Rob Steen and features 35 characters invented by the comic star of The Office: Ricky Gervais. Before becoming a comic mega-star Ricky Gervais was famous for being a permanent student. Although he originally went to university to study biology, Gervais changed to philosophy.

Ricky Gervais had been trying to get Flanimals published for six years, but only succeeded after winning a cart-load of Baftas for The Office. He also achieved international acclaim by being named best actor in TV comedy or musical at the Golden Globes in January 2004.

Flanimals, of course, are imaginary creatures. They have strange modes of locomotion like wobble pods; and weird names like hemel sprot; and weird living places like guddle deserts. They have anti-evolutionary habits - like always looking where they have been, and volunteering for recycling. These unproductive habits are backed up by strange abilities, like morphing from sweet creatures to raving monsters when stroked (sounds like my cat).

Can you answer the following questions about Flanimals: What is Glonk’s favorite pastime? If a Puddloflaj’s eyes pop out why can’t it pick them up? The Plamglotis only eats two things in its entire life. What are they? Why does the Offledermis live completely inside itself? You really need to know these things, fortunately help is at hand from Ricky Gervais.

Flanimals is a children's book, but it's also a great read for adults. Ricky Gervais' humour is not too complicated for children,  but fun for adults as well. This makes it a great book for adults to read to their children (or other adults).
