In Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes how a "Flow" state can lead to happiness. Flow involves a state of concentration so focused that it results in a complete absorption in an activity. This means you have no time top dwell on the negative things going on in your life.

Also, because flow involves pursuing a favoured activity in an optimal manner, you are becoming "all you can be". When flow stops you have time to savour the positive emotions, satisfaction and sheer joy that result in a job well done. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced "me-high chick-sent-me-high") outlines how you can achieve flow in many kinds of work and play, from reading to rock climbing.

Flow, first published in 1991, has become the classic work on happiness and the major contribution of the the positive psychology movement. For instance, the recent positive psychology text Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman introduces flow as the most important technique for achieving happiness.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow examines such timeless issues as the challenge of lifelong learning; family relationships; art, sport and sex as 'flow'; the pain of loneliness; optimal use of free time; and how to make our lives meaningful.
