Mediation techniques: how to meditate for beginners

This is the best book I have found on how to meditate. For beginners, there is no better introduction to mindfulness meditation techniques.

"More than any other, Full Catastrophe Living is the book that enabled Americans to discover the inner life. This book has brought peace of mind to hundreds and thousands of people and healed countless lives. This is your chance to let it heal yours.”
–Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom

Jon Kabat-Zinn is founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre. The title Full Catastrophe Living comes from Zorba the Greek, in which Zorba refers to the sum of life's difficulties as "the full catastrophe".

Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn provides meditation techniques, a detailed 8-week practice schedule, case histories and research findings on using mindfulness meditation to improve physical and mental health.

It's also a terrific introduction to meditation that does not push any religion. Jon Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness", which involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." You can practice anything "mindfully", from taking a walk to washing the dishes. But Jon Kabat-Zinn begins by showing you how to generate mindfulness in the simplest ways possible by using basic meditation techniques. This involves focusing your attention on breathing, a simple phrase, or parts of your body.

Many leading members of the positive psychology movement cite Jon Kabat-Zinn's work on mindfulness meditation when pointing to great successes in the field that people can use in their own lives.. See, for instance, Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman and Destructive Emotions by The Dalai Lama & Daniel Goleman.

Full Catastrophe Living shows how patients have improved their health and managed their pain by using meditation. It also shows how anyone can use these techniques to deal with stress, become happier, and gain inner peace.
